B Generic Name: LEVONORGESTREL (LEE-voe-nor-jess-trel)
USES:
This medicine is a progestin used to prevent pregnancy
after known or suspected contraceptive failure or unprotected
intercourse.
HOW
TO USE: The first dose of this medicine should
be taken as soon as possible within 72 hours of having
unprotected sex. The second dose should be taken 12
hours later. However, your doctor may instruct you to
take this medicine in a different way. Follow the directions
provided by your doctor. If you experience vomiting
within 1 hour of taking this medicine, contact your
doctor for instructions. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room
temperature below 77 degrees F (25 degrees C), away
from heat, moisture, and light. Brief storage between
59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted.
IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE, contact your doctor
immediately.
PRECAUTIONS:
THIS MEDICINE IS AN EMERGENCY contraceptive. It should
not be used for routine birth control. If you have sexual
intercourse after you take this medicine but before
you have your next menstrual period, be sure to use
an effective form of contraception, such as a diaphragm
or condom. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING
ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you
react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with
other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability
to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
USE OF THIS MEDICINE WILL NOT PREVENT the spread of
sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV.
THIS MEDICINE WILL NOT end an existing pregnancy. DO
NOT USE THIS MEDICINE if you are pregnant. IF YOU HAVE
DIABETES, this medicine may affect your blood sugar.
Check blood sugar levels closely and ask your doctor
before adjusting the dose of your diabetes medicine.
SIDE
EFFECTS: SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while
taking this medicine include nausea; dizziness; headache;
vomiting; breast tenderness; or heavy, light, or irregular
menstrual period or spotting within a few days of taking
this medicine. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
if you experience spotting instead of your usual period,
severe lower stomach pain, or if you miss your menstrual
period. If you notice other effects not listed above,
contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
NOTES:
DO NOT SHARE THIS MEDICINE with others for whom it was
not prescribed. KEEP THIS PRODUCT out of the reach of
children.
OVERDOSE:
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison
control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms
of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, and vaginal
bleeding.
